A glimmer of spring

Snowvilization
Mary and Roger DeVries of South Haven came home from Florida this past week to be greeted by a yard full of snowmen and snow animals. The snow creatures were created by the couple's friends, Beth Pepper, Becky Durden, Jackson Clark, Mattie Clark and Tim Durden and several other family members. "They wanted to surprise us when we drove in," Mary said. "It was so cute."

Even the waves were freezing this week
Waves look as if they're almost frozen while crashing against the shoreline of Lake Michigan in South Haven earlier this week. Midweek temperatures dipped to 1 degree and were below zero when factoring in the wind chills.

Lack of ice failed to stop this man from fishing in the mill pond in Bangor on Monday. He rode his bike to the pond and started fishing in 20-30 degree weather.

Truck vs. trestle
A semi-truck driver found out the hard way, Monday, that his semi-trailer was a little too tall for the 12-foot tall Arlington Street train trestle in Bangor. The trailer became stuck and had to be towed from the scene. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident.

Weather Centre.com predicts a cold, snowy winter for the Great Lakes region, due to the effects of El Niño. Of course much like Michigan's weather, that could change.

Pro football players do a dance when scoring touchdowns. Terri Abbott puts her own spin on that tradition by performing a cartwheel over home base in the Old-fashioned baseball game between the the House of David and the Bangor Cubs. The House of David catcher was apparently so surprised by Abbott's spur-of-the-moment theatrics that he never tagged her out. The House of David won the game 18-16. The game was a fundraiser for the Bangor Historical Society.

Cooling off

What happened to my watering hole?
This woodchuck found no relief from the heat this past week as he looks at what used to be a low spot on County Road 687 by 34th Avenue in Bangor that is normally filled with water. Many waterfowl like the low spot too. After a week of temperatures between 90 and 97 degrees, cooler weather began Sunday, July 8, in the South Haven area.

A rare occurrence
Kelly Weber of South Haven shot this photo of Venus transitting the sun on Tuesday evening at at 9:18 p.m. Venus is shown as the small dot near the upper right-hand corner of the sun. Venus isn't expected to transit the sun again until 2117. Many people were at Lake Michigan to witness the event on Tuesday evening. This photo was taken on the bluff near St. Basil Church, overlooking South Beach and Lake Michigan.

Snowflakes cling to a birdfeeder this past weekend in Geneva Township. Six to eight inches of snow fell on the South Haven area from Thursday evening through Saturday. Temperatures are expected to warm up this week, possibly into the 50s by Friday.

Snow Drops minus the snow
Earl Lietz, 84, discovered quite a surprise New Year's Eve when he noticed a half-dozen or so Snow Drops beginning to sprout in one his flower beds. The Grand Junction man said the little flowers have never sprouted during winter in the 32 years he's lived at his home. Snow Buds normally bloom in early spring. "I've never seen anything like this," he said. "I think it's a good sign." As of today, several of the flowers were still blooming. Lietz said he puts a plastic bowl over the flowers at night to keep away the cold temperatures and frost.

Sign says it all
Julee Sallaz of Bangor Township got creative for the fall season and painted a sign for her garden that she thinks reflects the spirit of the harvest season and Thanksgiving. She said she hand-painted the sign and used reused materials to decorate it.

An unusual sight
Peter Stecy managed to take a photo of a Peregrine Falcon in Casco Township recently. He discovered the bird north of Singing Sands RV park on 74th Street. The Perigrine Falcon was an endangered species until 1999. Michigan DNR introduced 139 Perigrines into Michigan, with 31 released in the Lower Peninsula.

Peek-a-boo
Two-year-old Emily peeks out from beneath her pillow to watch people walk by while at the Paws on the Pier event on Saurday. Jun 25. Emily belongs to Cori Perkins, a volunteer for Adopt a Freind for Life, a group in Paw Paw that helps find homes for abused, abandoned and stray animals. Paws on the Pier is an annual fundraiser for Al-Van Humane Society in South Haven. During the event, people could participate in a dog walk with their pets, visit pet information booths and watch agility performances by pets.

Signs of spring!
A robin perched in a flower bed of crocuses is a sure sign that spring is here in the South Haven area. When this photo was taken last week, temperatures soared to 70 degrees. However, this week's weather picture has changed, and temperatures are hovering in the 30s and 40s. Even a little snow is predicted for Thursday, March 24.

U.S. Army PFC Alexandrea Snyder (left) and SPC Tash Johnson sit next to the care package they received courtesy of volunteers from the South Haven area during the holiday season. The care package donations were organized through South Haven Township resident Joan Pioch. Pioch organized a group of residents to help purchase, pack and ship the items to soldiers from the area serving overseas. Just wanted to send out a huge thank you to all who participated, said Johnson, who sent the photo to the Tribune to publish.

Moonlight illusion

Marilyn Dodson of South Haven discovered what she first thought was a hummingbird on her butterfly bush, but on closer inspection she figured out it was really a hummingbird moth. Hummingbird moths belong to a genus of the species, Sphingidae. Their long proboscis and hovering behavior, accompanied by an audible humming noise, make them look very much like a hummingbird while feeding on flowers, according to information Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. Hummingbird hawk moths are related to the hummingbird moth and are found primarily in lower latitudes in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and northern Africa.
