Holtec International recently secured a $1.52 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy’s loan programs office to restart the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township.

BENTON TOWNSHIP — Spent fuel being stored on a sand dune along Lake Michigan, possible contamination of water, and the possibility of unpredictable violent weather were among the concerns expressed by the public Wednesday during a meeting hosted by federal regulators about efforts to restart the former Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township.

A nine-member panel from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees the operation of the nation’s nuclear power plants, spoke to about 100 people who packed the Lake Michigan College Grand Upton Hall.
